Nonotak is a creative studio project founded in 2012 by former illustrator Noemi Schipfer and former architect-musician Takami Nakamoto. Nonotak creates mind-bending light and sound installations that will transport you to another world. They’re not just about creating pretty light shows, Nonotak’s goal is to challenge and stagger their audience with their unique approach to space, light, and sound, inspired by minimal architecture and optical art.

One of their latest projects, SORA, is a perfect example of this. It’s a kinetic light installation that takes place in an architectural space that isolates the audience from natural light. This creates an opportunity for Nonotak to create their own mesmerizing landscape using kinetic setups and the rough texture of the Gasholder.

The name SORA means “sky” in Japanese, which is the main inspiration for this piece. The sky is the most powerful light screen, connecting us visually to outer space. It’s hard to perceive all the complexity of it, but the longer we look at it, the more we are able to perceive and realize details from it, especially at night.

In a minimal and geometric setup of moving light modules, SORA attempts to reflect the complexity that the sky has to offer. Massive lights forming lines are in motion right above the audience, changing directions with the illusion of wind. Hundreds of stars are choreographed through a contrasted soundscape. The rhythms of the piece interpret the characteristics of the sky, sometimes calm, peaceful, and dreamy, and sometimes energetic and stormy. Rotation is the central movement of SORA, and experimenting with this endless motion, Nonotak aims to guide the audience into a contemplative and hypnotic experience.

The live performance of SORA is the real game-changer. The musical artists perform within the installation itself, and all elements of the installation are controlled, altered, and arranged in real-time during the show, making every performance completely unique. Imagine being transported to another world while listening to live music.

Nonotak’s ability to merge the worlds of art, architecture, and music is truly next-level, and their use of technology to create immersive environments is truly impressive. SORA is an experience that will make you feel like you’re living in a sci-fi movie. If you’re into technology and want to experience something truly unique, Nonotak’s work is not to be missed.

You can buy tickets and visit SORA from january 6th until february 5th, 2023.
